The Never Ending Story
I've just agreed to participate in an online storytelling website, called The NeverEnding Story. In it, writers have to write the first few hundred words of a story then anyone can add to it.I have started a story something a little different to what I normally write and it will be fun to see where people take it. The link to the site - and a separate one to my story - are below, if you are interested in participating either in my story or one by one of the other writers.
Among those starting off stories are Jeffrey Archer, Dick King-Smith, Lesley Pearse, Isabel Wolff and Jeremy Vine. It should be fun!
The front page of the site is at The Never Ending Story and my contribution is here: Peter James at The Never Ending Story

Hi Peter,
You'll be pleased to know that two pages have already been added!
It's a great story and really original!
Where on earth did you get the idea from??
Thanks for joining in.

Hi Sarah
Thanks! I'm really pleased you like it!
I got the idea when I was researching for my novel Host some years ago, looking to see if it would one day be possible to download the entire content of your brain into a computer so you would have a backup! It was then pointed out that if you did this, you would constantly have to update it, because everything you experienced after the download woudl be different to the copy. So I then wondered, OK, if you duplicated yourself, your copy and you would only be exactly the same until one of you started doing something different to the other. I found it an intriguing concept. I just checked out the two additions and they are great - really adding to the conundrum!!!
I thought it would be fun to write something totally different to my normal work for this story - I think the whole concept of the neverending story is wonderful and I hugely look forward to following both my own and other stories.
Best
Peter

Hi Peter,
Your comment about downloading your memories/knowledge sounds like it could be a topic for one of members stories, Larry Westcotts 'Caffeine Fuelled Ramblings of a Gemini Mind'. Have you checked it out?
And do you mind if I mentioned how you thought of the idea in the forums?
Thanks,
Sarah

Hi Peter,
Great start to a story. It is an area that I am interested in the whole concept of consciousness, memory and can it be downloaded or replicated. I just mentioned on our forum about an interview I had heard with a futurist and author by the name of Dr. Cliff Pickover who had just written a novel called The Heaven Virus. It is a story about being able to upload our minds into a computer and continue living Virtually. Of course in the story at that point in time the area you were limited into was that of a virtual mall. But you could do anything within the mall. Of course there is a problem in this world that comes about but I found it to be an interesting idea.
Do you plan and adding any pages to the story in the near future?

Hi Larry
I think the rules are that I have to leave it to others to add for the moment.
You might find one of my earlier novels, Host, of interest - it is about a computer scientist who believes he could live forever if he could download his brain into a computer and have his body cryonically frozen. it deals exactly with the them you have mentioned - and has the darkest ending I have ever written!

Hi Peter,
You can jump back in to the story (or any other one)at any time!
There's no rules (well maybe a few, but that's what I'm there for :-))So anytime you get the urge to add another page please feel free.
All the best,
Sarah (TheNeverEndingStory)

Peter,
Thank you for the response it is refreshing to be able to interact with such a wonderful author as yourself. I will have to get the book Host that you mentioned.
Thank you Sarah for clarifying the rule. I would look forward to Peter jumping in any time on the story.

Hi Larry
I will jump in again for sure. At the moment I'm head down desperately trying to finish my new novel against a deadline, but when that is out of the way I will apply my mind back to it!
And thank you very much for your kind words!
And thanks, Sarah, for the clarification
All best
Peter

Hi Peter,
I'm your page 2,4,7 and 10 girl. It's a good job Larry wrote page 3 as I have my good reputation to consider! Your story was the first one that I added to when I joined TNES and it is due to this that I am now totally hooked. I hope you approve of the way your story is going.
All the best with your latest book but do spare a little time for us.
Cheers

Hi Diana
Gosh, thanks so much for being such a brilliant contributor! I've been off line in Sweden for the past week but will try to contribute something soon - at the moment I am totally snowed under trying to finish my new book and can't get my head around anything else, but I promise I will contribute more to this story when I have finished.
All very best
Peter

Hi Peter,
Can I ask a favour? When you do get chance to look in on TNES, please look at "House of Horrors" to see if you could add a page. It has been there for a while now and no-one has come up with a second page. I think it could do with a bit of expert help to get us all motivated.
All the best
Diana
