You did a splendid job on the whole page. I agree a person should be able to enjoy a smoke in comfort & food should always be a Joy. Nigella Lawson makes it look that way. Most of all, "What a Shameful way to Treat Police." Let's hope the powers that make those decisions, figure out a way to keep sufficient numbers of Police men & pay them what they deserve. There needs to be money for Families of fallen Officers as well, to help raise their children, help families with costs of living & education.

It makes absolutely no sense to raise the retirement age for almost everyone, then lower it for the police. What price expertise?

What next? Headteachers recruited direct from teacher training college, and teachers from among 6th formers?

My advice to the police would be to stop doing these rich idiots' bidding. Let them suffer if crime rises - pretty soon they'll be the only ones with anything worth stealing anyway.

    Val says what price expertise?

Let me give you an example very close to me. I have a cousin who is one of the most experienced and qualified midwives in the country with over 35 years experience, both 'hands on' and in the field of nutrition and education. She is 55. She has just been made redundant so that they can stop paying into her pension.

    What price expertise, indeed.

And Alison - isn't there supposed to be a shortage of midwives?

From what we hear, Val, yes. It's unbelievable really, isn't it?
